Our Mission: The Aniya Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing grief coaching support services to individuals in the Washington, D.C. area who have experienced the death of a loved one. Our trained grief coaches and volunteers provide tools, resources, encouragement, and support as individuals positively journey from pain to peace, heartbreak to happiness, and grief to gratitude in the shortest time possible, reducing the pitfalls and risk factors associated with unresolved grief.

Our Vision: The Aniya Center envisions a world in which we no longer live in a grief-avoidance society. Providing education, tools, and grief coaching support, individuals can reduce the emotional, psychological, and physical impact resulting from unresolved grief; positively embrace life; and, create a legacy after the adversity of grief and loss. It is our commitment to educate, raise awareness, and advocate on the significance of one’s unique grief journey experience and its impact on individuals, children, families, workplaces, schools, and communities. Ultimately, we believe that we can improve lives, communities, and the world by transforming the grief experience to perpetuate meaningful legacies.

Why do we grieve anyway?

We grieve because we loved. If you didn’t love the person who has died, there would be no reason to experience these painful emotions of loss. Grieving is not a selfish act, but is simply a compassionate response to the normal and natural feelings associated with the loss. Grief is our way of expressing, remembering, and honoring the cherished memories of a life and legacy.

Does anyone really understand how I feel?

Although meaning well, many try to offer support by saying, “I understand how your feel.” The reality is that no one can possibly understand how you feel as no one knows the exact intimate and personal relationship you shared with your loved one. Even siblings grieving the loss of a parent will most likely grieve in their own unique way. Unfortunately, we live in a grief-avoidance society and aren't taught the best things to say and not to say to someone who is grieving.

You don't have to navigate the wilderness of grief alone.  We are here for you.

How can grief coaching support help me?

Grief coaches will not try to fix, cure, or heal you. We will not judge you as you are not to be judged. We will journey with you to support and encourage you as you navigate the wilderness of grief. Our compassionate certified grief coaches and volunteer staff partner with you by offering coaching tools and exercises to help you cope with the painful emotions of loss while moving towards a new normal or renewed life of meaning and purpose. You are not alone. We are here for you.

We can’t guarantee results in your grief and life’s journey as these are dependent upon you doing the grief work and creating the changes needed to achieve them. We will do our best to help you reach that place of grief to gratitude, but the ultimate responsibility lies with you taking responsibility for the success you desire.

Please understand that our services as certified grief coaches is not treatment-based. We have no special training or qualifications as a licensed professional psychiatrist, counselor, financial advisor, physician, health care professional, business expert, or the like. We are not qualified to diagnose any medical condition or provide psychological counseling, behavioral counseling, or psychotherapy/psychoanalysis.

Finding this program felt very much like finding a little cabin in the wilderness when you're cold, wet, lost, hungry and tired.

What others are saying . . .

I am pleased to share how impactful the two sessions on grief conducted by Dora Carpenter were. Our class was held inside of the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women. The participants were grieving various losses, from children to parents, etc. We were all tremendously blessed and encouraged by the insight and wisdom we received from Ms. Carpenter. She not only encouraged us to move forth, but she also challenged us to live our lives to the fullest, while providing practical steps we could take to do so. I highly recommend this for anyone who is in the grieving process, as well as anyone who wants to help someone who is. In addition, I was pleasantly surprised to discover her counsel also included ways to make preparation for that day when we all must face dealing with the death of a loved one.

What our customers are saying

I just listened to your webinar and found it to be very emotionally rewarding. It brought back many fond and loving memories of the blessed time we [my husband and I] shared. I thank and praise God for you and the work that you're doing to enable others to move from grief to gratitude. Keep up the good work
